Pricing is genuinely all over the place in this city, and most of the numbers you see online are either old, out of state, or quoted for a service that is not actually balayage. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can read any quote and understand why.

Why is balayage cost so hard to pin down?

Balayage is freehand painting, so the price bundles three things: how much lightener your hair takes, how long the chair is booked, and how experienced the hand holding the brush is. A full head with a gloss sits above a partial, and a dark-to-bright lift spread over several visits costs a multiple of one session. One flat number for every head undercharges the hard heads and overcharges the easy ones.

Kevin, who leads our color work, runs every balayage as a consultation first. He looks at your hair in our studio light, asks about your last six months of color history, and tells you the number and the session count before you sit in the chair. If your hair needs two visits to reach the goal, you hear that on day one so the budget is not a surprise later.

The four factors that actually move the price

1. Length and density. Long hair takes more product and more time, and density counts as much as length: at the same length, fine hair and thick coarse hair take different amounts of lightener. A balayage on a bob can run two to three hours. The same work on long thick hair can run four to five, and the price follows the hours.

2. Your starting color. Virgin hair lifts faster and cleaner than previously colored hair, and the darker your natural level, the more lift you are buying. Dark virgin hair is one job. 3. How light you want to go, and how much gets painted. A soft sun-kissed balayage two levels lighter is one session. Platinum on naturally dark hair is two or three sessions weeks apart, and each session carries its own cost, so your goal photo drives the budget more than the word balayage does. 4. The toner and finish. Every balayage at our salon gets toned at the bowl. The toner is what takes brassy yellow to that creamy, expensive-looking finish, and whether it is included or a separate line is why two quotes for the same words look far apart. We use Milbon and Wella tones depending on your skin undertone and the result you want.

What is included when you book balayage with us?

When we quote a balayage at 3rd Coast Salon, the price covers the consultation, the painting, the processing, the toner and a finishing blow-dry. Bond treatments like Olaplex or K18, and deep conditioning, are separate add-ons rather than part of the color price, and your stylist will tell you if your hair needs one before you book.

How long does a balayage appointment take?

A balayage appointment at our River North studio runs three to four hours on average. Long or very dark hair can run closer to five. Those hours are one stylist and one station, which is what a color price buys. We block the full window when we book you so the chair is yours and nobody is rushed. Bring a charged phone, a book, or just enjoy the quiet.
